Hanoi Public School Becomes First in City With Solar Power System

It is part of a program to install solar panels at local schools.

Nhan Dan reports that Nguyen Trai Secondary School in Ba Dinh District now has a solar system on its roof, the first of its kind for public schools in Hanoi.

The work was partially financed by the Bach Khoa Investment & Development of Solar Energy Corporation (SolarBK) and the NGO Green Innovation and Development Center (GreenID).

The two organizations started the Green Citizen School program in 2018, which has installed solar panels at 12 schools thus far, mostly in Lao Cai and Ca Mau provinces, and now Hanoi.

According to the news source, the school received US$3,865 of the US$4,896 needed to purchase and install 14 solar panels that can generate 5.32 kWh of power. The system will run the fans and lights in 18 classrooms, saving the school up to VND1.5 million on their monthly electricity bill.

Le Hoan Chau, the school's principal, told Nhan Dan that during a good month, their bill is around VND7 million, while during particularly hot times of the year, this figure can double.

Moving forward, Nguyen Trai's over 600 students will take part in activities aimed at protecting the environment both at school and home. "The project will raise awareness and cultivate passion for the economical and efficient use of energy among students, gradually helping them develop a sense of a green lifestyle," Chau shared.
