Call for Peace in the 1960s and 1970s: American Artists and the War in Vietnam by Gail Levin, Distinguished Professor, The City University of New York

Time: 4-6pm, Thursday, Jan 10, 2019
Venue: Third floor, Block A, Vietnam National Institute of Culture and Arts Studies, 32 Hào Nam, Hanoi.

My talk will briefly outline a few of the major political issues that have attracted artists’ attention since abstract expressionism of the 1940s and 1950s until 1970s. I will show how various artists have attempted to deal with these controversial topics in their artworks. I will focus on opposition the war in Vietnam, but also discuss that opposition in the context of the campaign for Civil Rights; to protect the environment; and to obtain rights for women. Opposition to the war in Vietnam came in the context of the Cold War and the Cuban Missile Crisis and addressed excessive military spending.
